Klondike Solitaire-95 Documentation
1. Introduction: Welcome to Klondike
Solitaire-95. This popular variation
of Solitaire has been famous for many
years both as a card game and more
recently as a computer game. A version
of this game is shipped with every
copy of Microsoft Windows, and with
most Mouse Systems Mice.
This version of Klondike is created
specifically for the Hewlett Packard
95LX Palmtop Computer. It is
compatible with the HP 95LX System
Manager, and will coexist with your
other "blue-key" applications. This
means that if you are in Klondike
during a meeting, and you are suddenly
called on, you can immediately switch
to Appointment, Phonebook or Lotus 1-2-
3 to get back into work mode.
2. Shareware Registration: This
program is Copyright 1991 by Ed
Greenberg and Art Zemon. It is offered
as Shareware. You have a right to
preview and evaluate the program for
thirty days and must pay for it if you
wish to use it after that. Please
register all shareware.
Registered users will receive a
"registered" copy of the program,
including any changes or features
introduced.
To register, send the $10.00 fee and
your version number to: Ed Greenberg;
P. O. Box 28618; San Jose, CA 95159.
Please be sure to include your name,
address and CompuServe User ID. If you
prefer a disk, send $11.00 and advise
which disk format you require.
Registered users are always welcome to
upgrade to any later versions of the
program, either by CompuServe Mail, or
by diskette, for a nominal disk and
mailer fee. (Note: It may not be
possible to send disks overseas.)
3. Disclaimer: Although Klondike
Solitaire has been tested by both the
author and a team of beta testers, no
liability can be assumed for any data
loss or system damage or corruption
that may occur while Klondike
Solitaire is loaded on the computer.
The user is cautioned to back up all
valuable data no matter what software
is in use. This software is offered
without any warrantees of suitability,
mercantability or stability in various
computer environments and is used at
the customers risk at all times.
4. How to Play Klondike Solitaire:
4.1. The cards and the deal:
Klondike is played with one standard
52 card deck. The object of the game
is to build four stacks of cards in
the four suits, from Ace at the
bottom, to King at the top.
To start, 28 cards are dealt into
seven piles; the first pile, one card;
the second pile, two cards, and so on
up to seven. The top card of each pile
is turned face up, the rest face down.
This is called the TABLEAU.
As each Ace is uncovered, it is moved
to a four stack section of the playing
area called the FOUNDATION. Each stack
is used for one suit. The stacks are
built from Ace to King.
The remaining cards, usually held in
the hand, are known as the STOCK.
These cards are played three at a time
onto a stack known as the TALON, When
the Stock is exhausted, the Talon is
turned over and becomes the Stock once
again. Note that a variation of this
game called Casino Klondike is played
turning only one card at a time, and
going through the Stock only once.
This variation is not supported in
this game, but may be in future
releases. Since future releases are
encouraged by registration, those
users registering are encouraged to
feed back if they prefer Casino
Klondike.
4.2. Order of play:
Cards are played in three ways: (a)
From the tops of the seven tableau
piles to each other, and to the
Foundation, (b) from the Talon to the
Tableau or the Foundation, or (c) from
the Stock to the Talon. Cards are
played to the Foundation only upon the
immediate lower valued card of the
same suit. Thus, the three of spades
is played on the Foundation only if
the two of spades is there and
showing.
Cards are played to the Tableau only
upon the next immedate higher valued
card of the opposite color. Thus the
four of clubs (black) can be played on
the five of diamonds or hearts (red).
Cards are played on the Talon only by
moving three cards to from the Stock.
Only the top card on the Talon may be
played to the Foundation or Tableau.
The cards below are trapped unless the
top card can be played.
Play continues until all the cards are
played to the Foundation, or until no
move can be made. This condition
exists when the player cannot play any
card on the Tableau, and turns the
entire Stock to the Talon without
finding a legal move from the Talon to
the Foundation or Tableau. At that
point... give it up!
5. Installation
Copying files to HP95: Using the
connectivity pack, or other means at
your disposal, copy the KLONDIKE.EXM
file to the HP 95LX. You may install
it on the C: drive, or on a ram card
on the A: drive. You may install it in
the root or in a subdirectory as you
choose.
Creating the APNAME.LST: Once the
KLONDIKE.EXM file is copied to the HP
95LX, it must be entered in the list
of installed applications called
APNAME.LST. If this file does not
exist it must be created. Using the
memo editor, create APNAME.LST on the
drive that holds KLONDIKE.EXM. If on
C:, create C:\_DAT\APNAME.LST. If on
A:, create A:\APNAME.LST. Enter this
line in the APNAME.LST file, being
sure to modify the path to the file so
it points to the location you chose:
C:\_DAT\KLONDIKE.EXM,2500,Klondike
This line will tell the HP 95LX that
KLONDIKE.EXM can be found in C:\_DAT
and that it should be invoked when the
Alt-K key is pressed. For a list of
other keycodes that seem appropriate
for this game, see the appendix in
this document.
Once the APNAME.LST file is created or
modified, it is necessary to reboot.
First close all applications (such as
Lotus 1-2-3, APPT, PHONE or MEMO so
that the topcard shows on the screen,
then press CTRL-ALT-DEL at the same
time. The system will restart. Then
select Alt-K and watch Klondike start
up.
6. User Interface -- Playing the game
6.1. Parts of the screen
Across the top of the screen is the
Foundation. These four columns will be
built up with cards as you go.
To the right of the foundation is the
stock, face down, represented by a
card-back. When the stock is
exhausted, the card-back disappears,
then reappears when the pile is
(automatically) turned over again.
To the right of the Stock indicator,
is the Talon.
Below the Foundation, the number of
hidden cards on each pile is shown in
parentheses.
Below the hidden cards, there are
twelve rows in which the Tableau is
built. Thus, a column on the Tableau
can hold the cards from King to Deuce.
Finally, the function key indicator at
the bottom of the screen helps
associate each function key with it's
associated use.
6.2. Key Definitions
Quit the program by pressing MENU,
followed by the Q key. The MENU key
can also be used to request a new
game, or to start over with the same
deal of cards.
F1 - F7 represent the Tableau, columns
one through 7.
F8 represents the Foundation.
F10 represents the Talon.
The Stock is represented by the space
bar, well out of the way, so it won't
be pressed accidentally. [In early
versions, the F9 key was used, but it
was found to result in too many
errors.]
6.3. Klondike is played almost
exclusively with the function keys.
Each card move is represented by two
keypresses. For example, to move from
the Talon directly to the Foundation,
press F10, F8. To move a card from the
first pile to the fourth, press F1,
F4.
Note that moving a card from a Tableau
pile causes the next hidden card to be
shown. The number of hidden cards in
that pile is decremented.
When you wish to take cards from the
Stock, press the space bar, and three
cards will be move to the Talon. You
may then play the new top card on the
Talon to the Foundation or Tableau.
7. Suitable hotkeys for Klondike:
Earlier, it is suggested that Alt-K be
used for Klondile. This is useful for
most people, but users of Lotus macros
may have an Alt-K macro that will not
work if Klondike is assigned to Alt-K.
If you use Lotus macros, the best
choice for your hotkey is one of the
blue keys, modified by the alt key.
The following are the scancodes for
these keys. Use these scancodes in
place of the code shown above in the
section describing creating the
APNAME.LST file.
Alt-Filer = AB00
Alt-Comm = AF00
Alt-Appt = B300
Alt-Phone = B700
Alt-memo = BB00
Alt-123 = BF00
Alt-Calc = C300
